WORKS BUILD JOURNAL / NISSAN SILVIA S13 J’s

CHAPTER 02 / BODY REINFORCEMENT
CHAPTER 03 / ROLL CAGE & PIPE FRAME

From stock,
to the core of the body.
The WORKS build began with a 1991 Nissan S13 Silvia J’s, a car carefully maintained since new.
We started with the body itself, removing the engine, transmission and interior.
This photo journal follows the original car, body reinforcement, welded roll cage and tubular frame fabrication.

CHAPTER 01 / BASE CARStarting with a stock S13 Silvia J’s
For this build, we chose a 1991 S13 Silvia J’s.
The J’s was uncommon even when new. This particular car, equipped with a 2.0-liter SR20 engine, is a rare find for WORKS.
One distinctive feature is its manual windows rather than power windows.
Turn the door-mounted handle to open the window: this simple equipment is part of the J’s character.

- Service history
- Records retained since new, with dealer servicing almost every year
The service history matters as much as the car’s appearance.
This car retains service records dating back to new, showing dealer maintenance almost every year.
Starting work: removing the engine, transmission & interior
We began removing the engine, transmission and interior from this car.
Reducing it to a bare shell gives access to areas hidden by fitted parts. This is where the full custom build begins.
CHAPTER 02 / BODY REINFORCEMENTFrom thorough cleaning & paint removal to body reinforcement
First, a thorough clean in every corner
Before reinforcing the bare shell, we first thoroughly clean the underside, cabin, wheel housings and engine bay.
With normally hidden areas clean, we can proceed with the custom work.
Stripping the exterior paint back to bare metal
Paint stripper and other methods remove all exterior paint.
Rather than just removing the surface layer, we strip the paint thoroughly back to bare steel.
Removing the interior undercoating with dry ice
All interior undercoating is removed, with dry ice used as part of the process.
This exposes the floor shape and panel joints clearly for the reinforcement work that follows.
Reinforcing the panel joints, weld by weld
With cleaning and stripping complete, body reinforcement begins. We use spot, MIG and TIG welding equipment to reinforce the joints between the steel panels.
Door openings, window surrounds, the cabin and underside all receive attention. We add more than 1,000 spot welds throughout the body.
More than 1,000 spot welds.
Building strength, even where it will be hidden.
CHAPTER 03 / ROLL CAGE & PIPE FRAMEInstalling the welded roll cage & tubular frame
Fitting a welded roll cage inside the cabin
Next, we install a welded roll cage designed to meet FORMULA DRIFT JAPAN / D1GP regulations.
The tubes throughout the cabin are welded together individually. The photos show the layout and the amount of work involved.
There are so many connections that it almost makes you wonder how many points this cage has!

Replacing the rear floor with a one-piece 2mm panel
The original rear floor is cut out, and a new one-piece panel is fabricated from 2mm material and fitted.
This stage rebuilds the floor itself, rather than simply retaining the original shape.
Bending 4130 chromoly tubing for the front structure
The front structure uses high-strength 4130 chromoly tubing.
A tube bender shapes the tubing to run continuously from the bulkhead to the core support, forming the front tubular frame.
The strut areas are also joined to the structure to increase front-end strength.
The work extends beyond the cabin roll cage to the structure at the front of the body.

That is the progress so far: a record of building the body’s foundations step by step from a stock S13 Silvia.
More stages of the build will be introduced as work progresses.
